SIM003Description
Joaquin Miller (1839-1913), the "Poet of the Sierras," sits at the center of this photograph. He is surrounded by admirers, including Peter and Susan Simon of Los Gatos, seen at the left. Miller (his given name was Cincinnatus) was a colorful and unconventional man. His poem "Columbus" was memorized and recited by legions of schoolchildren. He recited the work himself at the 1897 dedication of Bunker Hill Park in Los Gatos. This photograph was taken at his Oakland Hills home around 1895. SIM003Collection
