SP001Description
When Henry Ford of Detroit arrived in Los Gatos on October 23, 1915, he had come to visit an old friend and mentor, Charles Phelps Gilbert. Gilbert hired Ford in 1889 as a "tramp engineer," and the work relationship lasted for seven years. Between the years of 1899, when the first automobile appeared on the streets of Los Gatos, and 1925, when this snapshot was taken of the Hotel Lyndon at the corner of Main and Santa Cruz, Ford had been a major player in a revolution. His establishment of the Ford Motor Company in 1903 soon led to an assembly line method of production. The Ford Model T was a sturdy car that many people could afford. By 1925, the price of a touring car had dropped to $290. And so, when Ford visited Los Gatos in 1915, he may have seen a mix of horse-drawn transportation and automobiles. But by 1925, the automobile had replaced the horse, and more than half the cars sold in the United States were Fords. SP001Collection
