SP002Description
Eliphalet C. Wiley (1847-1928) and his wife Rosealtha McDonald Wiley (1854-1936) are pictured in the gardens at the back of the Hotel Lyndon on June 25, 1925. Why this Midwestern couple, who had spent their lives in Illinois and Ohio, decided to retire to Los Gatos is not known. But they were not alone. The Hotel Lyndon had a number of customers who checked in and stayed for years. The Wileys probably lived in the cottage seen at right with its windows propped open to admit the "exhilarating mountain breezes" promised by the Chamber of Commerce. In turn, the hotel promised comfort, convenience and excellent cuisine, all at moderate cost. Each room and cottage was equiped with a telephone. The couple had two sons, one of whom became a rather famous writer in the 1930s and 1940s. Hugh Wiley (died 1968) was a prolific author of mystery stories who created the character of a Chinese-American sleuth named James Lee Wong, depicted as an agent for the U. S. Treasury. Boris Karloff played the part of Wong in a number of movies. SP002Collection
