TOB013Description
The Tobin family relaxed in their large back yard for this summer portrait on East Main Street. The year was about 1900. Identified are Helen V. (sitting at the left), Isabella Kirkpatrick Tobin (third from left), Janet A. (petting the dog), and Mary (sitting on the chair arm, third from the right). The other two women are unidentified. The man at far right is probably John F. Tobin (1824-1889), Civil War veteran and Isabella's husband. He apparently never recovered from his war experiences and his assignment as a hospital steward, and he had some degree of disability. He did receive a pension for his service. When he first appears in the 1870 Census, he and Isabella are living in Santa Clara. His occupation is listed as "Huckster." After the family moved to Los Gatos, John served as adjutant of the Los Gatos E.O.C. Ord Post No. 82, Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union Veterans. In late 1885 he was elected to serve as Surgeon in that organization. TOB013Collection
