Description

This photograph, purchased as part of a large collection of Tobin images and memorabilia by Charles Bergtold, is probably Isabella Kirkpatrick Tobin (1838-1917) with her middle daughter, Mary Isabella Tobin, in about 1880. Isabella was born in London, England, but her parents were natives of Scotland. The Kirkpatrick family immigrated to the United States in 1843 aboard the ship "Huntress," arriving on Dec. 23 that year. Isabella was 5 years old, and her sister Janet was 9 years old. Their father, John Kirkpatrick, was 40 years old and listed as a merchant. Isabella was the bride of Lieutenant John F. Tobin by the time she came to California via the Isthmus of Panama. The couple left Cannelton, Indiana at the close of the Civil War and settled in Santa Clara for about ten years. The Tobin family then moved to Los Gatos and opened the town's first news depot in part of their house on East Main Street. Isabella remained in Los Gatos for the rest of her life, about 35 years. When she died on December 6, 1917, at the age of 79, she left an estate valued at $10,000. TOB016
