TOB019Description
Mary Isabella Tobin (1876-1960) is shown in this photograph taken sometime between 1900-1905 in the back yard of 128 East Main Street. Her giant patch of geraniums illustrates how easily flowers grow in the temperate climate of Los Gatos. Mary was born in Santa Clara, before her family moved to Los Gatos circa 1881. She had just reached 84 years of age when she died on February 27, 1960 in a local rest home. According to her obituary, which ran on the front page of the Los Gatos newspaper, a requiem mass was said for her at St. Mary's Church on March 1, 1960, and she was buried in the family plot at Los Gatos Cemetary. The obituary also stated that Mary was a graduate of Los Gatos High School, but it is more likely that she attended some of the first "graduate" classes offered. Census records reveal that she was born on February 15, 1876, but as the years went on she claimed to be several years younger than she was, as did her two sisters, Janet and Helen. TOB019Collection
