"A Case of Need" Drawing by Janet TobinEntry/Object ID
TOB021Description
Janet A. Tobin (1879-1946), a noted artist, drew this pen-and-ink image of a woman in a low-cut ball gown, a classic early nineteenth century style. It was said that a refined woman always looked as if she were on her way to a garden party. A translucent, soft complexion and a delicate waist were the most valued measures of beauty, no matter the health risks. Wavy hair, loosely piled on top of the head, was made popular by the "Gibson girl" model of the era. Janet's older sister Helen, (1869-1955), penned a poem to go along with her sibling's drawing. Janet and Helen, along with their sister Mary (1876-1960), lived out their lives at 128 East Main Street in Los Gatos. TOB021Collection
