Description

This photograph shows the family home of John F. and Isabella Kirkpatrick Tobin at 128 East Main Street. The modest house, constructed circa 1881, also served as the Town's first news depot, where newspapers of the day were sold. On October 19, 1890, Isabella Tobin nearly lost her home when the nearby Seanor Opera House, just to the west, burned to the ground. The fire occurred in the year after the death of John F. Tobin, but Isabella Tobin carried on, had repairs made and she lived in the home until she died in 1917. This is the same residence where the three Tobin daughters, Helen, Mary, and Janet, lived out their lives in a genteel manner, drawing, painting, gardening, and writing poetry and fiction. TOB003
