Description

Janet Kirkpatrick (1833-1919) was the older sister of Isabella Kirkpatrick Tobin. In contrast to her sister Isabella, who married and gave birth to eight children, Janet remained single all of her life. She was nine years old when the Kirkpatrick family left England and emmigrated to the United States. Little is known of her life before she came to live with the Tobin family in about 1894. During her 25 years in Los Gatos, she was a devout member of the Los Gatos Presbyterian Church. After she died at home on August 27, 1919, her obituary noted that she had gentle manners and a loveable disposition. She lived to the age of 86 years. She died of chronic bronchitis, high blood pressure, a pulmonary embolism, and long-standing complications from a leg fracture. She is buried in the family plot at Los Gatos Cemetary. In this photograph taken at 128 East Main Street, Janet is reading a popular fiction magazine, The Strand. TOB027
