Description

Zephyr Macabee (1857-1940) is shown in his East Main Street, Los Gatos barber shop, circa 1895. In a July 30, 1931 interview in the Los Gatos Mail News, Zepher said: "My father was a farmer. I was the oldest of eight children - a farmer's son, which means a lot of hard work, doing without, and getting along on nothing. Going to school when I wasn't needed, which, believe me, wasn't often. We came to Los Gatos in 1883. A little after that father invested in a hotel on the corner turn of San Jose Avenue. The hotel was called the Colman (sic) House. I was clerk, bus boy and handy man of the place. But it didn't go over, and it sunk my father. I got a job in a barber shop. The proprietor wanted an assistant, and I looked able. I made a good barber." MAC030
