1870 Santa Cruz Gap Turnpike Joint Stock Company Toll House
Entry/Object ID
HC011
Description
James Kennedy, who appears in this picture with his wife, built the toll house in 1867. Two days after the company's toll road charter expired on November 17, 1877, angry teamsters dragged the toll gate to the creek and dumped it in. This incident was dramatized in the Los Gatos "Trail Days" celebration of 1940, held to celebrate the completion of the Los Gatos - Santa Cruz highway into town. HC011
