Description

Memorial Day 1891. This view is on East Main Street looking west, near the site of the current Civic Center. The 1896 Los Gatos GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) roster lists members' occupations as orchardists, ministers, ranchers, carpenters, merchants, barbers, physicians, bankers, editors, and many "fruit growers." Although some of the men came from California, most came west from many different states after the Civil War. For a number of years, until its membership grew too small, the G.A.R. would lead the Los Gatos Memorial Day parades. PAR025
