Notation on photograph reads, "Employees of F.W. Crandall ? In the Drier at corner of University and Cypress Avenues." Fred W. Crandall and William Rice grew prunes and pears on 50 acres of land between Los Gatos and Saratoga. They opened the "Big Orchard Drying Establishment," pictured here, in 1887, an enterprise with "5,000 trays on the ground." Crandall is standing alone in the right foreground. The dryer burned down on July 17, 1901, and the fire consumed 431 tons of dried fruit. BER019
