BU027Description
Frank Burrell, pictured here in 2004 in the Los Gatos Library's history room, is the great-great-grandson of pioneer Lyman J. Burrell (1801 - 1884). Lyman was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, and his portrait was created when he was 77 years old. Lyman moved with his family to the "vast wilderness" of Ohio, and from there joined the Gold Rush to California in 1849. In 1853, the Burrells settled in their Mountain House at the summit of the Santa Cruz Mountains, a few miles from the McKiernans. Four yoke of oxen and two wagons pulled the family's household goods up the mountain, including iron bedsteads from Boston and "one little pig in a box." The journey took three days. They traveled over logging roads and areas with no roads at all. Lyman's wife Clarissa was in frail health, but complained only that the new place "is not handy to market." BU027Collection
