BU001Description
Lyman Burrell (1801-1884) and Clarissa Wright Burrell(1805-1857) were married in 1839 and had three children. Despite the challenging life she led as a California pioneer, Clarissa managed to write a series of letters which now serve as a valuable primary source of information about her life and times. She tells of her 103-day trip to California around Cape Horn with her children, of life on the mountain top, and of her husband's encounter with a grizzly bear. When she died she was buried on the mountain ranch. Her son, James Birney Burrell (1840-1921), pictured here with his mother and sisters Clara (left) and Martha (right), was one of Santa Clara Valley's pioneer fruit growers. BU001Collection
