1905 Boy on Railroad Avenue (Montebello Way) Near Depot

Entry/Object ID

SS036

Description

The train depot is on the right, and the Rankin Building on the left. A Los Gatos lad in knickers is seen leaning on a hitching post. What is now Montebello Way has had a number of different names through the years: "Oak Street," "Front Street," and "Railroad Avenue." The area was also known as "Chinatown," dating to the years when Chinese railroad construction workers lived in shanties along the creek. In the early years, this area held special attractions for the boys of the village, including Sing Lee's Laundry where Chinese firecrackers could be purchased. Jumping on and off moving trains and swiping fruit from boxes waiting for shipment were other notable transgressions. SS036
