Description

Maggie May Fink (1889-1956) and her youngest son, Lester, are shown here at the Fink Ranch on Shannon Road, circa 1925. Maggie was born in Oregon. Her mother, whose maiden name was Swanson, was from Denmark. Maggie married Victor Fink at age 16 and became the mother of seven. After milking the cow, Maggie would hurry to make dinner for her family. Their home was constructed in about 1873 by sea captain Melvin S. Gardner (1814 - 1878). Gardner bought the "Spring Creek Ranch" of 244 acres for $18,000 in gold dust, circa 1872. Gardner had come across the plains in 1849 and made a fortune in gold mining in Placer County. He planted a large almond orchard on his Shannon Road property. Victor Fink bought 27 acres of the Gardner subdivision in 1925, and the family stayed on that land until about 1940. FIN050
