Description

The 1906 concrete and stone Main Street Bridge survived the powerful earthquake of April 18, 1906 just weeks after it was completed. It suffered only one cracked pillar, which was quickly patched. When a new bridge was planned in 1954 as part of the streamlining of Highway 17, engineers had a challenge, as can be seen here. The old span, built with hand labor and teams of horses, came down with the help of dynamite. CON019
