DIS012Description
As part of the fire alarm system a 2500 pound bell, 12 feet in circumference at the lip, was installed on top of a wooden tower near the Lyndon Hotel on Santa Cruz Avenue. The tower burned down in the fire of 1901 and the bell fell to the ground. As a result, three cracks developed in the bell. Subsequently the bell was installed on a steel tower near University Avenue School, and served the community well for several years. In the 1930s a siren system was implemented and in 1951 the "bull horn" was installed. In 1947 the tower and bell were removed. The tower and bell were eventually purchased by a Mr. Pollard who owned a "Chicken Kitchen" Restaurant on Highway 99 south of Lodi. In payment for painting the restaurant, Andy Kinyan, a former Los Gatos resident, was given the bell. Mr. Kinyan donated the bell to the town and it is now on display near the front entrance to the Art Museum on Tait Avenue. The museum building was the first "modern" firehouse in Los Gatos.
