The majority of buildings in Los Gatos were built of wood, and fire was an ever-present threat. Volunteer fire brigades were the only source of protection prior to 1886 when two hose companies (one on each side of the bridge) were formed. Company Number 1 is shown here. It was located opposite the train depot. For an unknown reason some of the men appear in "black face." Dick Shore, standing under the "No. 1," was fire chief for for 18 years. DIS002Collection
