1901 Livery Stable Fire

Name/Title

1901 Livery Stable Fire

Entry/Object ID

DIS007

Description

The railroad tracks stopped the fire, but most of Main Street was in ruins. The conical tower of the Hofstra building (now La Canada) is evident just to the right of center, and the Lyndon Hotel is to the left. The fire started at the rear of the bakery on Park Avenue, and soon spread to Tisdale's Stables. Eight horses died, including a handsome matched black team that Mr. Tisdale had recently purchased in San Jose. Telephone messages and telegrams sent to San Jose and San Francisco asking for assistance on the Sunday morning of the fire went unanswered. DIS007
