Description

On the day in 1931 that Joseph Doetsch, Jr. received his engineering degree from Santa Clara University, he returned to the family ranch in north Los Gatos, put on his work clothes, and set to work washing out wooden apricot trays. Young Joe Nishimura stands at his side in this image, which is symbolic of the long relationship between the two families. The Doetsches purchased their ranch in the early 1920s. With the help of the Nishimuras, they had a yearly production of 400 tons of apricots, prunes, almonds, grapes, and strawberries from thier land, much of which is now under Vasona Lake. When the Nishimuras returned from the internment at Heart Mountain, Joe Doetsch, Sr. helped them reestablish their lives. DOE001
