Description

The Los Gatos Central School was designed by local architect William Lobdell and built in 1886 at a cost of about $9,000. It had 15-foot high ceilings, blackboards completely around the four classrooms, and white cedar stairway handrails capped with black walnut, to go with the fine black walnut newel posts finished in oil. Two sinks with faucets were on the first floor, one for each sex. One linen towel, one tin cup, and one comb were fastened to each sink by chains. In 1893 a contract was let for about $6,000 to build an addition on the south side of Central School, to house the high school studies program already underway. Henry Meade Bland (1863-1931) served here as the first principal of the high school. He was the poet laureate of California 1929-1931. School was closed for a week in October 1893 to facilitate the moving of the two old original school structures 25 feet to the north, to make room for the new addition. In 1908 the first separate high school building opened on the crest of High School Court. That same year, Central School was extensively remodeled and the Victorian tower removed. It then served the community as the grammar school through 1922. SCH002
