The first elementary-school classes in Los Gatos were conducted in a building on Oak Street (now Montebello Way). Often children were taught in homes. The first one-room schoolhouse on School Street (now University Avenue) appeared in 1875, and that plot of land continued as a school site until 1961. When school opened on August 8, 1881, a second room had been added to the original 1875 structure at a cost of $920. Ninety-eight children were enrolled.
