Description

Bessie Farwell (1869-1960) was J.D. Farwell's sister. older by one year. She is shown here, probably the woman on the right, riding on the float "California" in the 1912 Saratoga Blossom Festival. According to the 1900 Federal Census, Bessie was a bookkeeper and was living with her brothers J. D. and Howard in Saratoga. Apparently neither Howard not Bessie ever married. Howard's World War I draft registration card shows that he was employed as an orchardist at Glen Una Ranch. Bessie's name appeared in the San Jose Mercury News on Nov. 11, 1917, when she won an award for her wild flower display at the Los Gatos Flower Show. Bessie's name appears again in the acknowledgements to the book "Ambrose Bierce: The Devil's Lexicographer," by Paul Fatout. The author interviewed Bessie about Bierce, indicating that she knew Bierce during the time he spent in Los Gatos. FAR002
