HC007Description
Scotsman James Alexander Forbes acquired 2,000 acres of the original Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos in late 1852 from Jose Hernandez. On the east side of Los Gatos Creek, he built a flour mill - the first commercial building in Los Gatos. HC007 By 1854, it was four stories tall. However, the milling equipment, shipped from Rochester, New York, arrived late and was difficult to install. On December 1, 1855, the mill finally started to grind the wheat of local farmers. On May 29, 1857, the Santa Rosa Brand Four Mill and its surrounding land were sold in a sheriff's bankruptcy sale on the steps of the Santa Clara County court house. The mill was damaged in the 1906 earthquake, and demolition began in 1916.Collection
