HC002Description
Forbes' Mill, the first commercial building in Los Gatos, was constructed in 1854 and marked the real beginning of the town. It was built by James Alexander Forbes, prominent early Californian who had held the post of British vice-consul at San Francisco in the 1840's and later became interested in the New Almaden mining properties. The town was first called simply Forbes Mill, then Forbestown. The mill building was constructed of a kind of dark green stone from the Los Gatos Creek which is said to be found nowhere else in California. The building passed from Forbes' hands in 1857 but continued to be used as a flour mill by successive owners until 1887. Later it served as a power plant for the Los Gatos Ice and Power Company, the Los Gatos Gas Company, and finally the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. HC002Collection
