HC006Description
Forbes Mill was located on the east bank of Los Gatos Creek, just north of what became Main Street. This was the first commercial building in Los Gatos. James Alexander Forbes completed the four-story building in 1854. However, the milling equipment had to be shipped from Rochester, New York, and arrived after the building was finished. It proved difficult to install. On December 1, 1855, the mill finally started to grind the wheat of local farmers, but the operation did not prosper. After passing from one owner to another, the mill became the Los Gatos Manufacturing Company in 1870. It ended operations on January 14, 1887. Thereafter the Los Gatos Ice and Power Company and Los Gatos Gas Company occupied the building. PG&E purchased the building in 1912. Demolition began in 1916, saving only the 1880 storage annex, which served as a substation until 1955. HC006Collection
