HC050Description
The El Monte Hotel (1891-1909) was located on the northeast corner of East Main and Pleasant Street. Originally the Coleman House, it was enlarged and successively named the Alpine, the Rockhaven, and finally the Hotel El Monte. It advertised itself as "positively the only first class hotel in Los Gatos," no doubt comparing itself to John Lyndon's hotel across town. The El Monte was apparently targeted several times by an arsonist in the early 1900s, and burned to the ground on July 3, 1909. The owner, Mrs. W.W. Gray, carried only $5,000 insurance on the building, and it was never rebuilt. HC050Collection
