Description

Zephyr Macabee, second from right, is seen standing in front of his Royal Shaving Parlor barber shop in 1894. He appears to have hired a second barber to assist him. Notice the gentleman waiting for his shave and haircut seated just inside the front door. The location is the "first Rankin Block," built by Judge Benjamin P. Rankin in 1887 on North Main Street at the west end of the bridge. In addition to the Macabee establishment, the first floor was also home to the Post Office, a restaurant, and a cigar stand. The second floor of the building served as the “French Hotel.” All of the businesses were destroyed when the building burned to the ground in 1899. Later the Montezuma Block was built at this location.
