1891 Fire of July 26Entry/Object ID
HC058Description
The "Cartridge Fire" of July 26, 1891 started on a Sunday evening in the wooden finishing rooms at the rear of the Place and Fretwell Furniture Store on the north side of East Main Street. The fire destroyed buildings on both sides of Main Street, including the Arlington Hotel, where the tower and turrets collapsed within an hour. Cartridges exploded in the H. J. Richardson Hardware Store, and gun powder stored in a tunnel in the side of a hill scattered earth and stone in every direction. The steeples of the Presbyterian and Methodist churches are seen in the distance. HC058Collection
