1900 Celebrating the Arrival of the Broad GaugeEntry/Object ID
HC088Description
When the first broad gauge passanger train arrived in Los Gatos on April 15, 1900, a large crowd of townsfolk and people from surrounding cities turned out to say welcome. A picnic was held in Bunker Hill Park, where Highway 17 now runs. Before 1900, passengers from San Francisco to Los Gatos had to cross by ferry to Alameda to board the narrow gauge train. Completion of the broad gauge allowed Los Gatos to boast that it was "the only resort town in the state located in the mountains that could be reached direct from San Francisco without a ferry crossing." The new route was via Redwood City, Palo Alto and San Jose. HC088Collection
