JON038Description
In the mid-1950s, the Southern Pacific investigated abandoning the two-and-a-half-mile "stub" from Vasona Junction to downtown. By relocating the commuter stop to Vasona, the runaround procedure would be eliminated. On January 23, 1959 at 7:59 p.m., engineer L. H. Cleveland highballed the last scheduled commute train back to San Jose, ending 81 years of passenger service into town. The following morning, the Central Coast Railway Club sponsored a "Pulling of the Spike" ceremony along with a final excursion to San Jose. More than 1,200 spectators showed up to bid farewell to Los Gatos' railroad. JON038Collection
