CTS016Description
Los Gatos - Spanish Name for "The Cats." Chained bobcat sitting. It was not unusual to see bobcats in the hills south of Los Gatos. Sometimes they were captured, sometimes killed. A hunter might decide to drive into town with the cat strapped to the hood of his car, so that everyone could see the animal. Poems appearing in the 1913 Wildcat annual indicate that a living bobcat served as a mascot at sports events. "Bought by the boys for a five dollar bill," the cat died an untimely death just before a basketball game with Campbell. The cause of death may have been an improper diet or simply a lack of food.
