JON056Description
Geraldine McGrady Jones, pictured to the left of her husband Billy, began her teaching assignment at Wright's one-room schoolhouse in 1914. A 1911 graduate of Los Gatos High School, she pursued her teacher training at San Jose State Normal School (San Jose State University), commuting from her family's Los Gatos home via the Peninsular Railway. This photograph was taken soon after the 1918 wedding of Billy and Geraldine. Geraldine wrote: "We had a chance to go on a work train that pulled the Bowman Ditcher. Each member of the crew had a box car to live in. Ours was fixed up with a bedroom, living room and kitchen combination and a woodshed. Whenever the Ditcher had to be moved, the cars were connected and off we all went. On Monday mornings, Billy would bring the engine alongside the car and fill up the wash tubs with hot water and attach a line to a telephone pole." JON056Collection
