Stephen J. Worden (1822-1890). Born in Vermont, Stephen was a cooper (barrel maker) who landed in Monterey while working on a whaling ship in 1844 and decided to stay. He worked as a carpenter in San Jose and then left for the gold fields in 1849. In 1858 Stephen met Francisca Hernandez Filzon, daughter of Don Jose Hernandez and widow of a man named Filzon. Stephen and Francisca were married in June of 1858. They had six children: Mary, Michael, Hannah, Stephen, Phoebe and Jesus. He was a big man for the time - 6 feet tall and 210 pounds. In 1890, at the age of 68, he was repairing a barn when a scaffolding collapsed and he broke his neck and died. KEM012Collection
