Description

Lucy Cosgrave Balch and her oldest child, Carl Balch, are shown here at the Balch/Case compound about 1930. The San Jose Mercury Herald reported on April 15, 1920 that Lucy's husband, S.D. Balch, had sold most of his stock in the Bank of Los Gatos to J.A. Case, the bank president, and to J.D. Farwell. Balch had been cashier at the bank for 16 years, during which time the deposits had grown from two hundred thousand dollars to one and a half million dollars. The newspaper reported that Balch took this action because of his health, although he lived for another 33 years. Mr. and Mrs. Balch were contemplating "an extended trip east" at the time of his retirement. BAL013
