Description

Childhood portrait of Carl Balch (1903-1998). On May 12, 1911, just two weeks before his 8th birthday, Carl was hit by a train. The San Jose Evening News reported it this way: "Carl Balch, a schoolboy of Los Gatos, was run down on a crossing in that town Tuesday by a fast moving Southern Pacific train. The boy was riding a bicycle and miscalculated his chance to cross the tracks before the approaching train. The engine struck his wheel throwing him violently off the track, but when he was taken to Dr. Gober's office, a careful examination failed to show any injury worse than bruises. How he escaped injury is not known." BAL014
