Description

Mary Balch (born 1909) is the daughter of Lucy Cosgrave Balch, who wanted Mary to attend Mills College - "a finishing school" -- for two years. Mary did that, and then went on to Stanford University, where classes were available for her to complete a degree in geology. Mary graduated from Stanford in 1930, the only female in her department. She worked professionally as a geologist for a number of years. BAL019
