NOV003Description
This postcard view of the Novitiate was produced before 1906. In the 1880s, the Jesuits chose the hills behind Los Gatos as an excellent site for establishment of a training center for novices. In 1886 they purchased the 40-acre ranch of Harvey Wilcox, already planted with orange trees and a small four-acre vineyard. The original winery was a wooden frame building constructed in 1888, followed by a large cement structure in 1893. By the mid-1890s the Novitiate was producing a variety of table and dessert wines from many grape varieties. NOV003Subject
