A portrait of Mary Balch, taken in 1913. She was born in 1909. In 1930, Mary graduated with a degree in geology from Stanford University, with a class of 20 men. During that Depression time, Mary was the first one to find employment. Mary was hired by Henry Gould, a mining engineer, who leased small mercury mines and then reopened them to extract quicksilver. Mary earned $25.00 per month. In a 2006 interview, Mary said Mr. Gould hired her because she could type. BAL028
