Officers Walter Phillips and John CovaleskEntry/Object ID
LAW022Description
Officer Walter Phillips is on the left and Officer John Covalesk is on the right, ca. 1939. In 1932, the police force consisted of the Chief of Police and two officers, each of whom had to furnish his own gun, ammunition, uniform and automobile. The first patrol car was purchased in 1937. During that era, a red light at the Bank of America corner at Main Street and Santa Cruz Avenue signaled when an officer was needed. Seeing the light, the officer would go to the nearest phone and call in to the telephone supervisor for the message. LAW022Collection
