Route of the SPC and SP Railroads: "Call of the Wild" road signEntry/Object ID
LEI056Description
A "Call of the Wild" road sign on the Old Santa Cruz Highway adjacent to the right-of-way of the South Pacific Coast (S.P.C.) and later the Southern Pacific (S.P.) railroads. "Call of the Wild" was located about 1 mile north of Wrights a train scheduled stop. If someone in the Call of the Wild area needed to move passengers or freight they would simply hang a flag from the roof of the small log cabin style depot and the train would stop. Jack London frequented and perhaps even lived in the area for a while but it is unknown whether his famous book, Call of the Wild or the name of this small mountain community came first.
