Oval portrait of Daniel and Sarah McCoy, early Los Gatos settlers. "Dan" McCoy (1843 - 1927) was born in Bloomfield, Iowa, on April 13, 1843, a son of Joseph and Nancy (Pelly) McCoy, both natives of Virginia. Joseph McCoy went to Iowa and purchased 1000 acres of land, which he farmed successfully. In 1858, with his family, he joined a train of emigrants and started across the plains to California. According to the "History of Merced County" by John Outcalt, published in 1925, "there were sixty persons in the company, bringing 2,000 head of loose stock. They lost 1,000 head in the first Indian encounter. Eight persons were killed by the Indians during six hard fights; one woman and three little girls were taken prisoners and were never heard of again." By the time the group finally reached California, they had suffered "indescribable hardships," many of the company dying of starvation. Joseph McCoy and his family settled near Visalia and he became a rancher and teamster. Dan McCoy began work at an early age, herding sheep and then driving a ten-horse team for his father. In 1862 Dan settled in Los Gatos, where he engaged in hauling lumber from the Santa Cruz Mountains until 1913. On November 12, 1871, Dan married Miss Sarah Amanda Crews, who was born in Harrison County, Missouri on March 31, 1853. They became parents of 10 children. In 1913 Dan and Sarah moved to Merced, where they lived on a 20-acre ranch. Mcc002Collection
