PE031Description
William Cleland (1866 - ?). William was the son of town father Thomas Sidney Cleland (1838 - 1914), after whom the street is named. The 1880 Federal Census shows that Thomas is a widower, living with his son and Samuel and Nettie Rambo. Thomas must have remarried, as an obituary appears in the January 8, 1907 San Jose Mercury News for Mrs. Susan E. Cleland, wife of Thomas, who died in the couple's home in Boulder Creek. The 1886-87 City Directory lists William's occupation as clerk at Cleland & McMurtry, a Los Gatos store. By 1920, William was a civil engineer, employed as a surveyor by Santa Clara County, with a home in San Jose. He and his wife Julia E. Cleland have an adopted son, George. PE031Collection
