Description

Therese Libante (1905 - 1996), owner, with her husband, of the Gem City Laundry, is shown at the side of her home at 15 University Avenue, known as the "Wagner River Rock Bungalow." Constructed in the 1920s, the exterior of the one-story bungalow is composed entirely of rounded rock obtained from Los Gatos Creek. The original owner, Charles Wagner, had a barber shop on West Main Street, and Mrs. Alice Wagner conducted her professional photography business here. Therese Libante was born in France. The 1930 Federal Census shows that Therese was living in Reno, Nevada and employed as a "presser" in a laundry. Libante's Gem City French Laundry was located at 11 University Avenue, one of Los Gatos' best examples of Art Deco style. This small stucco building was constructed in 1934 for Jacques Libante. It was built in the rear yard of the Libante residence, and was used as a French hand laundry into the 1960s. PE074
