Description

Nana-Ruth Gollner (1919-1980) was a ballerina who overcame infantile paralysis to become the first modern American ballerina to achieve the rank of Prima Ballerina in a European ballet company. Part of her therapy was to excercise in sand; then she took dance lessons to strengthen her feet. The Gollner family moved to Edelen Avenue in Los Gatos, and Nana attended University Avenue School and danced in school shows. She went to Hollywood, then joined the Ballet Russe, the Ballet Monte Carlo, and then the American Ballet Theater. She danced throughout Europe and South America. She appeared on the cover of Life magazine on March 20, 1944. PE112
