PE213Description
These passengers are traveling in style to Santa Cruz aboard an observation car on narrow-gauge rails. This photograph was taken before the 1906 earthquake. Accidents on the railroad were fairly frequent. In March, 1906, engineer Peter Simon had the unfortunate experience of backing his engine toward the roundhouse when Lewis Schilling, age 72, stepped into his path. Schilling's body was "severed in twain," according to the March 25, 1906, Sunday Mercury Herald. PE213Collection
