RID007Description
Zephyr's son, Raymond Z. Macabee (1895-1984). Raymond was born in the small bedroom adjacent to the front parlor of the family home on Market Street, now designated as 110 Loma Alta Avenue. Raymond attended Market Street School during his early years, and then in 1912 is listed as a seventh-grader at Los Gatos Grammar School. His education was somewhat erratic, due to the expectations of his father Zephyr, who expected him to buckle down and start to be a productive part of the family's business. He apparently made his first gopher trap at age 10, and he stayed on the job until he was 80 years old. He did not attend high school because he was working full time. When he died at age 89 in 1984, he left behind his daughters Mary Barnes, Joyce Ridgely, Phyllis Shipway and Nancy Johnson, his sister Roma, and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Raymond was drafted into the Army on August 22, 1917, and sent to France to fight in World War I. An article in the September 20, 1917 San Jose Mercury News stated: "It is expected that many will attend the farewell to the soldier boys held in San Jose on Friday afternoon and evening. Raymond Macabee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Z. A. Macabee, is one of the boys to go with the contingent." RID007Collection
