RON011Description
In 1929, Beth Grover, age 19, arrived at "The Cats" estate of C.E.S. Wood and Sara Bard Field. She was riding in Sissy Seaman's roadster with pigskin seats. Born to a Russian refugee family, Beth became a swimming star as a child in Portland, Oregon, performing with seals at the Pantages Vaudeville Theater and demonstrating water stunts for the newsreels. She met divorcee Kitty Seaman Beck at a swimming pool in 1917 and was subsequently "adopted" by Kitty and her sister Emily G. Seaman, known as "Sissy." When C.E.S. Wood engaged Sissy to assist in writing the biography of his father, the first surgeon general of the U.S. Navy, Beth Grover came along to Los Gatos, where she soon became a reporter for the Mail-News. This photograph of Beth Grover was taken when she was seven years old, in 1917. RON011Collection
